This is one of the largest wooden buildings in Okinawa with a red-tiled roof that is the only one that still retains its pre-war appearance. The brewery and living space are under the same roof, and there are many marks left behind, such as graffiti in English on the hari, which suggests that it was used as a place for the U.S. military to stay, and bullet holes on the outside wall. There are only two people in the brewery, the brewery manager and the chief brewer at a sake brewery, and they continue to carefully make Awamori (https://okinawa-awamori.or.jp/awamori/?lang=en) on a production line that has not changed since around 1970.

Description

Tsukayama Sake Brewery is an active awamori brewing facility located in Nago City. The building is constructed of wood and has an area of 95.51 square meters. The site is nearly elliptical in shape, facing a street to the south, with the main building to the south of the center and the malt building to the north, a moat surrounding it, and the main gate in the center of the south side. It is believed that the main building and the malt building were built at their current locations between 1927 and 1930 by designer Junichi Shimabukuro and builder Tokusaburo Kinjo. The main gate and outer moat were constructed, and it is thought that the production of Awamori also began at that time. The main building, malt building, main gate and outer moat, gate and inner moat, and south well were all registered as Tangible Cultural Properties (Buildings) on March 2, 2006. The value of the main building is that it combines the facilities for Awamori production and the living space, and, together with the malt building, retains the form of brewing facilities that were typical of the early Showa Era (which started in 1926). The residence portion of the main building inherits the traditional house plan that is common in Okinawa, but also shows aspects of modern development, which is important for understanding contemporary housing in Okinawa.
