 Nago City is located in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, and has the largest area of any municipality on the main island. A nature-rich place with many mountains and forests that is also surrounded by the sea, the city has thriving commercial and tourism industries, and even hosted the G8 Summit in the year 2000. Nago is home to Tsukayama Brewery, which makes Awamori, an Okinawan alcoholic beverage made with long-grain indica rice, in the only remaining traditional house that survived from the era before World War II. Constructed from 1927 to 1930, it is a building that lets you see firsthand the construction techniques and wisdom of life of the time. It is one of the largest existing wooden buildings in Okinawa Prefecture with a roof made with the distinctive Akagawara red roof tiles. Recognized for its historical value, it has been designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property and also serves as a well-known tourism base for the region. With its handmade production methods and Nago’s famous water, Tsukayama Brewery is committed to its brewing with deep roots in the local community, and is known as one of the treasures of Nago.
